Tanja McKay, Ph.D.

Professor

Bio

Originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, I received my B.Sc. degree in Biology from Acadia University, Wolfville and my M.Sc. degree in Entomology from the University of Manitoba, where I studied the biological control of house flies in dairy operations. I received my Ph.D. in Entomology from Kansas State University specializing in the behavior of a small parasitic wasp, Muscidifurax zaraptor, that parasitizes house flies. After completing my dissertation, I joined the staff in the Department of Entomology at the University of Arkansas as a Research Associate in Veterinary Entomology where I conducted research in broiler-breeder egg production and turkey finishing facilities. I evaluated filth fly monitoring systems and identified pathogens important to food safety, such as Samonella and Ecoli spp., carried by flies. In 2004 I joined the faculty at Arkansas State University. Currently, I am a Professor of Entomology. My research projects include integrated pest management for stored rice, dung beetle ecology in pasture and forest ecosystems, and canine heartworm associations in mosquitoes.
