General Entomology Lecture - BIO 3303  Fall Semesters 

Lectures emphasize the ecology, biology and life history patterns of insects. 3 credits.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1)    To become familiar with the internal and external anatomy of insects, and to understand insect physiology

2)    To appreciate the importance of insects in our environment

3)    To develop an understanding of the ecological relationships between insects and their environment

4)    To appreciate the important role that insects play as vectors of some of the most serious diseases afflicting humans and animals

General Entomology Laboratory - BIO 3301 Fall Semesters

This laboratory course deals with the identification of insects. Labs are organized taxonomically.  Each lab focuses on one or more orders of insects and students will learn to identify insects to the family level. 1 credit.
Course Learning Outcomes:
1)    To be able to identify various insects to the order and family level

2)    To be able to identify various insect body structures and types

3)    To become familiar with various developmental strategies

4)    To introduce students to various insect sampling devices

5)    To develop a well-organized and neat insect collection

Economic Entomology Lecture- BIO 3313 Spring Semesters

This course deals with the scientific principles and integrated pest management practices associated with the control of insects and other arthropod pests.  Lectures will emphasize the ecology, biology and life history patterns of insects based on their associations with humans, domestic animals and crop systems.  3 credits. 
Course Learning Outcomes: 

1)    To become familiar with insect structures, life processes and classification

2)    To understand the ecological role of insect pests and the effects of the environment on insect development

3)    To become familiar with surveillance and sampling techniques used in integrated pest management

4)    To appreciate the various control strategies used in integrated pest management

5)    To appreciate the various insect pests found in various crop systems

Economic Entomology Laboratory- BIO 3011 Spring Semesters

The main focus of this laboratory is to sight identify insect pests related to our environment.  Labs are organized taxonomically. Each lab focuses on one or more orders of insects and insects are identifies to family level. 1 credit.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1)    To be able to identify various insects to the order and family level

2)    To be able to identify various insect body structures and types

3)    To be able to identify various insects associated with crops of importance to Arkansas 

4)    To identify the types of insect development and damage each insect does to crop systems

5)    To be able to identify various insects associated with humans/animals and zoonotic diseases
 

Medical and Veterinary Entomology Lecture- BIO 6313 Fall 2023 Semester

This course deals with the identification, life histories, and ecology of arthropods of medical and veterinary importance.  Insect-borne diseases that affect humans and public health will be discussed in this class. We also will address insect-related problems associated with domestic animals, particularly livestock and companion animals (dogs, cats, horses etc.).  3 credits.

Medical and Veterinary Entomology Laboratory - BIO 6311 Fall 2023 Semester

Course Learning Outcomes:

1)    To be able to identify pests of medical and veterinary importance 

2)    To be able to learn the biology and ecology of various arthropod vectors 

3)    To be able to provide integrated pest management techniques to diagnose, prevent and control arthropod vectors

This course is the laboratory companion class to the lecture. 1 credit.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1)    To be able to identify pests of medical and veterinary importance to family and species level using taxonomic keys

Insect Taxonomy Lecture - BIO 6322 Fall 2022 Semester

A survey of the orders and families of insects; designed to familiarize the student with the use of taxonomic literature and keys. 2 credits. Lecture two hours per week. 

Course Learning Outcomes:

1)   To introduce students to the various orders and families of insects.

2)   Students will be introduced to various developmental strategies.

3)   To become familiar with various ecological relationships.

4)   To familiarize students with different types of sampling devices for arthropods.

Insect Taxonomy Laboratory - BIO 6321 Fall 2023 Semester

This course is the laboratory companion class to the lecture. 1 credit.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1)  To become familiar with the various insect orders and families using taxonomic keys.​

2)  To introduce students to the proper techniques of preparing and organizing an insect collection.
